TECH-MAC-MAYACOM
Place: Myonichi-kan, TokyoThe title, 'TECH-MAC-MAYACOM' is short for 'Technical Magic My Compact'. It is a spell of 'Acco-chan', a heroine of Fujio Akatsuka's cartoon, 'Himitsuno Acco-chan', when she transforms using her magic compact. The animation appeared on television as a children's program in the late 60's and was remade and televised twice in the late 80's and 90's. It is a story of 'Acco-chan', a girl with magical powers. She transforms into anyone she wants by using her magic compact in order to save people. This animation became a tradition within Japanese animation and was influential to future cartoonists. Both London and Tokyo are both Cities of very diverse and exciting cultures. 'TECH-MAC-MAYACOM' is a group exhibition of 14 artists based in both countries, with a very unique insight into both cultures, with the majority of the exhibiting Japanese artists now living and working in London. The experience of both cultures has changed whom we are as people and how we think and behave as a result it; significantly it has influenced the art we make. We would now like the opportunity to exhibit our work back in our homeland to an audience who would not otherwise see such work from up and coming artists like ourselves. We felt the title of the exhibition 'TECH-MAC-MAYACOM' reflected the mutual keywords in the contemporary cities, such as 'magic', 'transformation', and 'fantasy' and was found within the works. This international show is rich in various kinds of media; painting, sculpture, installation, video and performance art.
